The club was initially formed by Theo Alles and Mike Ferris and six other turners in 2001. They would gather at each others shops to talk turning and work on developing new skills. They started meeting monthly testing the waters for interest. When it seemed that there was enough sustained interest in April of 2002 the group joined the American Association of Wood Turners and officially became the Great Plains Wood Turners. In a few short years membership grew from eight to between 30 and 50 full time regular members that travel from as far away as Kearney, Columbus and Norfolk to attend meetings.
