Great Plains Woodturners Rudy Lopez was the guest instructor at a seminar jointly sponsored by Great Plains Woodturning Club and the Loess Hills Turning Club. We had a full house for this wonderful event and all of the hands on sessions were sold out well in advance. A master at turning thin walled goblets and bowls Rudy proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is all about sharp tools and tool control. He turned a beautiful natural edge goblet and a very unique walnut bowl with a white scalloped edge great shape and thin even walls. He took a small piece of branch wood and turned a very thin long stemmed goblet with a 1/16 ” stem and a bowl so thin that the light shined brightly through it. We all held our breath as he continued to take one more cut even after the light was shining through brightly. Rudy talked about the need for very sharp tools while doing any type of turning and the value of the negative rake scraper. He gave a short training on sharpening during the break. All in all an excellent day that left those lucky enough to have secured a seat in the hands on classes the following days with great anticipation of what was to come. Thank you Rudy for such a great day.
